2011 Chevrolet Cruze

Chevy's new whip is tiny, but don't underestimate it.

Story: Will Sabel Courtney

Model Tested: Eco

The crew at Chevy is known and respected for an array of different vehicles, from Silverados and Suburbans to Camaros and Corvettes. However, it hasn’t traditionally been a brand people think of when the subject of compact cars comes up. But with a roller-coaster economy and gas prices looking like they have nowhere to go but up, the company wants to change that—and they’ve succeeded with the new Cruze.

Like the rest of the compact class, the Cruze is best judged in the everyday routine of commuting; this also happens to be where the car shines brightest. Thanks to a variety of fuel-economy- boosting tweaks such as low-resistance tires and a super-tall overdrive gear, the Eco model will knock out 40-plus miles to the gallon while still passing most cars on the freeway. Now, that’s our kind of cruisin’.
