2009 Mercedes-Benz SL65 Black Series

Rating: 6

THE MERCEDES-BENZ SL BLACK SERIES is extreme…likely too extreme for the weak at the wheel. Hop in, and after only a few pothole-riddled roads, the super-stiff suspension will mash your vertebrae into a slurry. Its out-of-control acceleration requires both hands permanently grasp the chubby steering wheel, and the dietetic carbon-fiber body panels that make this SL lighter than the “pedestrian” SL AMG are more delicate than teenagers in love. Force that around town and you’ll roll slow like you are pushing a bagged Impala. Let’s just say it’s not the whip for a carefree Sunday drive—but damned if it ain’t the most badass car to come out in the last 20 years. And if you are
lucky enough to be one of the 250 elite to get their mitts on one, expect to shell out over a quarter mil for the privilege. Now, do you need the most ambitious car Benz has ever built? Nah. Would you give your soul to own it? Defi nitely. JACK CHINELLI
