’85 chevy caprice on 30s
Rivals, friendly or not, often bring out the best in people, or in this case, Boxes. Take this ’85 Caprice, which ultimately is a response to the Blues Clues–themed Box from the East Coast Ryders Vol. II video. “The idea behind this car was to go after that Box Chevy, to make it bigger and better,” says Garfield’s new owner, Karl Krantz. If you’re a loyal RIDES reader ya might recognize this ’85 Chevy, that was originally owned by fellow Elegance member Dr. Pernu, from RIDES Aug/Sept 2005 limited edition collector cover.
To give the Box an ’07 overhaul, Karl took the cat-versus-dog theme to the streets—being the only cat in the game with 30-inch clear rims. Karl and Elegance Car Club needed a character to match the already-tangerine-licked whip, so the club brainstormed. “We chose tangerine because not a lot of people had it at the time, so now we were looking for a character,” explains Karl. “We don’t know where it actually came from but overnight between everybody, we started talking about a character. Nobody has Garfield, so let’s go with Garfield!”
Like all of Karl’s projects (remember the Montecut?!), the Garfield Box is a work in progress. Behold the cat’s future: four-inch thick clear MHT rims on all four corners, custom Brembos, underbelly powder coating, chromed suspension and more. 305, stand up! J.C.
