With big, fuel-chugging SUVs trending south faster than kaffiyeh scarves will this fall, the move to make sexy, high-priced sedans that seat four adults comfortably is, without question, set to be the new rage. And Porsche is just in time with the Panamera. Available in three trims—S, 4S and Turbo—this four-door whip is a first for the Stuttgart brand.

To really understand the value of the Panamera, one should hop up not in the driver’s seat but in the backseat. Clearly the thought process here was to build a ride that fits real-size people and would be worthy of being driven and driven in. There are two rear bucket seats that are separated by a center console, which allows the rear passengers to control things such as climate and even the passenger seat in front of you. And thanks to the Panamera’s bubble-butt design, there is plenty of headroom, even for extra-tall folks.

But at the end of the day, this is still a true Porsche—even if the motor sits up front and the lift-gate trunk feels like a hatch—which means, it’s meant to be driven. The whopping 500 ponies under the hood are proof of this. Produced by a twin-turbo V8 and translated to the ground via an AWD system, coupled to the PDK dual-clutch transmission, the power in this P-car is phenomenal. Activate the launch-control function and the moment you release the brake, the Panamera will rocket down the road as if it were being pulled by a chain, attached to a Mack truck falling off a cliff. And it does so with grace. That’s what makes this sedan unique for Porsche; it’s well-behaved, whether it’s on the 4.0-second dash to 60 mph or cruising at well over 150 mph. You could call it the Gentleman’s Porsche—and if you have the means, and need room for more than just one homie or your shorty, you should call it your Porsche.
