X-Ray Spec

New car-sized scanner installed at US/Mexican borderti

All y’all on the west side might be able to enjoy them weekends down in Tijuana a little easier now. Thanks to US Customs & Border Patrol’s new “Z Portal” your car can be scanned for contraband – before it’s dismantled and left on the shoulder. The Z-Portal works much like a traditional X-Ray machine, allowing Customs officials (not owners) to drive through and check out suspicious vehicles. Radiation levels are low enough that a few thousand trips through the scanner barely come to the levels found in a typical physician-administered x-ray. Just installed last week, San Diego law enforcement claims the Z has already nabbed more than 3,000 lbs of drugs. But did it find any people?
