When the MonteCut made its debut in the Dec/ Jan ’06 issue of RIDES, it slammed the automotive world on its ear. Customizers across the South and eventually the rest of the country couldn’t wait to hit the local lift shop with outlandish requests for elevation. Five years later, skinny tires and squatted stances reign supreme, and incorporating statuesque lifts with thick rubber on cars is an uncommon practice.

Kent’s Automotive, which is swiftly becoming the custom shop for big-rimmed builds, is constantly aspiring to step the bar up a notch. When Kent’s customer delivered the righteous Regal, it was already perched on 30-inch spinners and rockin’ a shiny gold jacket, but it needed an upgrade to remain relevant. “This client has been known in our region for a long time as one of the top dogs,” proclaims Kent. “And he knew that if he wanted to go to the next level, we could get him there.”

Kent’s crew stripped the burly Buick down to its birthday suit, removing all the custom audio, dismantling the interior and shaving the body down to bare metal. Once prepped, a gorgeous mix of tangerine and cranberry candy paint was then tediously applied, accented with tear-away ghost flags and a sublime trunk mural.

Adhering to the extraneous agenda, Kent ordered up a set of 32-inch Asantis and Yokohama tires, setting the customer back a staggering $32,000. “He wanted to be on top again,” says Kent. “And having the biggest wheels available couldn’t hurt.” And as if wheels that cost more than a new Dodge Charger weren’t enough, the candy creation wouldn’t be invincible unless it went topless. Kent was mindful that convertible conversions on old-schools have the potential to be a recipe for fail soup, so he did extensive research on which convertible frame to use. After much trial and error, Kent ended up utilizing an apparatus from a vehicle that he’d like to keep a secret in order to keep rival shops in the dark. “The top is fully functional,” says Kent. “The motorization works perfectly, and the quarter glass on the sides looks factory—it turned out great.”

With multiple car-show victories, Internet fame and, most important, street notoriety, the objective was achieved with this plush Goliath, leaving little else to the imagination. “I’m not sure what more we can do to the car,” laughs Kent, “but I’m sure we’ll come up with something!”
