What it do? I just read the Paul Wall story in the last issue, and I was
wondering if you could get in trouble for swangin’ [driving side to side to hog the lanes and show off], ‘cause I am gonna start doing that out where I stay…T.J. , via email

As Told To Tony Kanebako

Robert Manzo, Lieutenant,
Houston Police Department:

“If someone is driving down the street and switching lanes without signaling properly or taking into consideration that there is other traffic around them, they are creating a hazardous situation. That’s grounds for a police officer to take action, and then that officer has the authority to stop the individual and ask him for his driver’s license and insurance. Then you’d get either a verbal warning or a ticket for unsafe lane changing, failure to signal intent to move from one lane to another, or impeding traffic, which is driving at less than the posted speed limit. There are a variety of violations in the Texas Transportation Code that could be applied. Of course, there’s always the possibility that a police officer could stop the driver of a vehicle and then they would have reason to check them for any possible warrants, and look in the vehicle to see if there is any contraband, drugs, or anything illegal, and to determine if they have been drinking or are in possession of alcohol. And if the officer sees anything in there that’s illegal, the officer would take further action. Every situation is different and could go in many different ways.”
