Street Stylez rolls with a mix of whips. Story BRIAN MILLER /// Photography Charlie Garcia Car crews boast, exaggerate and sometimes lie about their number-one status. But you won’t catch Street Stylez engaging in the art of storytelling; they consistently come out on top with their assortment of trophy-winning whips. “When we go to the [car] shows, we try to focus on winning every category,” declares 39-year-old pack leader Philip Hovenito. “We try to have all styles and the best in the styles.” Streets Stylez’s winner-take-all mentality has been instilled in the Miami, FL-based organization since forming in 2001. Originally enrolled as a member, Hovenito took over head duties from former prez George Caveivila nearly a year ago. Since the shift in power, Street Stylez has merged with other squads and incorporated more rides into the club’s fold. “In the North, people like Armed with a slew of wheels that includes luxes, SUVs and their flagship sport imports, Street Stylez members are renowned in Dade County for their blue-ribbon rides at car shows. “In Miami we take all the club participations, all the Best-of-Shows locally—and also throughout the state most of the time,” brags Hovenito. Even local music artists, he says, have taken note of the super sleds by using them in videos: “We did a reggaeton video and a couple of rock videos.” As of now, with four chapters in the Sunshine State and roughly 70 affiliates, Street Stylez is seeking to expand their operations further. But for newbies wanting to vault into Stylez’s winners’ circle, Hoventino asks that while the whips don’t have to be show-stoppers, they do need to be slightly modded. His request, however, is slightly self-serving: “If we show love to them when they don’t have nothing, they’ll show love to us when they have something.”
