It's a Rap
Since hip-hop’s earliest days, heads have looked to their favorite rappers to dictate the latest in everything from hot kicks to how to lace their whips. But rappers can’t lay claim to making
hi-risers the hotness—the streets did that. Still, the hip-hop world took notice. Maybe you can call these MCs Mr. Me Toos, or maybe they really have been riding high—regardless, here’s what they said in RIDES.

“[Donks are] dope as long as people understand that this is a Miami thing
You know Miami doesn’t get credit for a lot of things but we definitely created the Chevy sittin’ on 26s or 28s-"

“When you put all of your energy into your Donk like we do, it’s not about ridin’ by fast. You want to be seen so cats know that you reppin’ the streets for real. It represents that street hustle…"
—dj khaled, July/August 2006
“In Dade County, a Donk is equivalent to an S500 Mercedes… I’m gonna make sure
Jay-Z go buy a Donk.”
—rick ross, July/August 2006

“We from the land of bad credit and dope boys that can’t do nothing but buy an old-school car. You don’t need nothing but $2,500… A Chevy on some 24s or 26s is a king’s car. A Donk is like a reflection of you, because you took your time and money… A Benz just says, ‘I got money.’”

“When you ridin’ in an older car that you put work into, you feel a sense of pride when you ride out With an old-school you watch it evolve But when you go get that new car, you only have
the options to get it how they sell it. With us down south it’s an easier-going pace we’ll take an old-school car and make it go ahead That’s just how we do We like to bang that beat and ride high on them streets"

“I hate to see muthafuckas put those butterfly [Lambo] doors on a cheap-ass car. Then, I just hate to see muthafuckas take a car worth $20,000 and put $50,000 into it. That shit just don’t make sense to me… Old-schoolers hold their value, though. Old-schoolers are collectors’ items.
That’s different. Far different.”

“Those [Donk] cars are stupid. Caprice Classics with 28-inch rims? Those are big pieces of shit. Those cars look so damn wobbly. You can’t even drive them joints, man. They look like
a horse and carriage with those big-ass rims. It’s like, are you serious?”
